Wrexham Transfer Details Emerge As Medical Completed

Josh Windass will join Wrexham on a three-year deal after completing his medical yesterday, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

The 31-year-old is a free agent after departing Sheffield Wednesday last week. His exit from Hillsborough followed the ongoing wage debacle under owner Dejphon Chansiri, which saw a host of players and staff left unpaid.

This allowed a number of first team stars to give notice of their intention to leave the club, with Windass and teammate Michael Smith seeing their resignations upheld. It brought to an end a four-and-a-half-year stay at the Owls for the former Rangers man, who will be remembered for his late Wembley winner in the League One play-off final against Barnsley in 2023.

Windass Set For Wrexham Transfer

The attacking midfielder’s availability alerted a number of Championship clubs. Wrexham were one of those to make contact with the player, with reports emerging over the weekend that personal terms had been agreed and a medical had been booked in.

It was confirmed last night that all formalities have now been completed, with his transfer to North Wales set to be announced imminently. The Red Dragons were also linked with a move for Smith, but seemingly lost out to division rivals Preston North End yesterday.

The signing will mark another major milestone for Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The duo have sparked a remarkable rise up the football pyramid, with this season offering the opportunity of an unprecedented fourth straight promotion.

Having risen from the National League to the Championship in the space of three years, this season will undoubtedly be their biggest test yet. However, they have already strengthened significantly following the signings of goalkeeper Danny Ward, left-back Liberato Cacace, midfielder George Thomason and striker Ryan Hardie.

This is a transfer that looks to suit all parties. Wrexham will land a player with bags of experience at this level whilst Windass will be hoping that the move gives him the opportunity to move into the Premier League for the first time in his career. However, the Red Dragons are expected to make several more signings before the season starts next month and it will be interesting to see where Windass fits in. He’s clearly an upgrade on their current options though.
