After conducting a lot of solid business earlier in the summer, Watford were in need of an extra full-back to add strength-in-depth to the squad, and the Hornets have reportedly missed out on a deal to re-sign homegrown hero Ashley Young.
Wiley Returns to Watford
However, the Hertfordshire-based club have announced the return of defender Caleb Wiley on a season-long loan from Chelsea on the club’s official website, meaning they now have two full-backs who can play at right-back, and two who can play on the left of defence.
Last campaign, the Hornets’ full-back stocks were boosted heavily by the loan additions of Wiley, Festy Ebosele and Yasser Larouci, meaning they severely lacked options on either side of the defence going into this transfer window.
They confirmed the arrival of experienced Englishman Marc Bola earlier in the summer after a two-year stint abroad, and Wiley has now been signed to provide competition for the 27-year-old.
The American international is tremendously experienced in men’s football despite being just 20 years of age.
He made his debut in the MLS for Atlanta United when he was a teenager and he went on to make 85 appearances for the Georgia-based side, scoring six goals and providing seven assists in the process.
This led to him being signed by Premier League giants Chelsea, who reportedly paid £8.5 million to secure his services in the summer of 2024, making him the 15th-most-expensive departure in MLS history.
After spending the first half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Strasbourg and struggling to get into the French sides’ team, Wiley was recalled by Chelsea and moved to Watford at the end of the winter transfer window.
He had a solid run in Tom Cleverley’s team in the final weeks of the season, ending his first stint at Vicarage Road with one assist in 10 appearances.
Upon re-signing Wiley, Watford’s Sporting Director Gian Luca Nani said:
“We are delighted to have secured Caleb on loan once more.
“He was impressive in the games he played for us last season and his attitude is incredible.
“To have him for a full season means we have the talent and consistency Paulo [Pezzolano] wants defensively.”

Writer’s View
This is a very solid signing for Watford. Wiley’s youthful exuberance should pair well with Bola’s slightly more experienced head to give the Hornets two good options at left-back and Jeremy Ngakia can also fill in on the left-hand side of defence if needed.
Wiley is an excellent attacking full-back who loves to run with the ball and put crosses into the box, but he was also incredibly successful in defensive duels for Watford last campaign.
If he were to start at left-back with Rocco Vatta on the left wing, it would give the Hornets one of the most exciting left-hand sides in the Championship.
