Carlisle United Manager Hails ‘Big Character’ Ahead Of National League Campaign

Carlisle United head coach Mark Hughes has tipped Regan Linney to be a major influence in the club’s National League campaign after the summer signing struck in a pre-season win over AFC Fylde.

The 28-year-old forward, brought in from Altrincham, netted his first goal for the Blues in a 2–0 victory, showing early signs of the impact he could have.

Speaking to the News & Star, Hughes was full of praise for Linney’s start, highlighting his influence beyond the scoresheet.

“Regan’s come in and he’s a big character – everybody’s really happy he’s here,” Hughes said. “He’s really endeared himself to everybody and he’s going to be a big player for us.”

Linney’s strike followed an opener from Luke Armstrong, another summer signing, as United’s new attacking trio — Linney, Armstrong, and David Ajiboye — got their first real run-out together.

Hughes was encouraged by the fluidity of his front three, noting their ability to interchange positions and provide variety in attack. “It’s having that unpredictability that you want to give opposition defences,” he said. “They give opposition different threats and problems to solve.”

Formation Experiments and Squad Fitness

The game at Mill Farm gave Hughes a chance to assess various tactical options as Carlisle prepare for life back in the fifth tier. The manager confirmed his willingness to tweak formations based on opposition and personnel, stating, “There’ll come a point where I’ll land on one way of playing, but I need that comfort of knowing what I can go with.”

Several other players caught the eye in the friendly. Luke Armstrong impressed with his goal and movement, while teenage defender Hayden Atkinson was given more minutes in the absence of senior options. Hughes downplayed the praise, though, saying the youngster had “done okay” but still had time to develop.

There were also minutes for new signings Georgie Kelly and Josh Grant, the latter making his first appearance for the club with a 30-minute second-half stint. New centre-back Bevis Mugabe watched from the stands, with Hughes indicating he may need a few weeks before being ready to play.

Carlisle rotated heavily after 60 minutes, with Hughes confirming the focus in the final half hour was more on fitness than tactical analysis. A similar approach is expected in Tuesday’s friendly at South Shields.

Writer’s View

Regan Linney’s arrival may not have grabbed national headlines, but his early contribution suggests he could become a fan favourite at Brunton Park. Hughes clearly values not just Linney’s goalscoring instincts, but also his personality and versatility — vital traits in a squad that must gel quickly for a competitive National League season. Carlisle’s relegation was a blow, but the fresh attacking setup — bolstered by Armstrong and Ajiboye — already looks promising. If Linney continues to settle this smoothly, he may be one of the key pillars in a promotion push.
