Interest Mounts In Key Leicester City Star

A host of Bundesliga clubs have joined the ever-growing lists of interested parties for Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The 28-year-old has spent nearly a decade at the King Power Stadium since signing for a fee of £17 million from Belgian outfit Genk in January 2017. He has been an almost ever-present since, racking up over 300 appearances whilst winning the FA Cup and the Championship title.

Ndidi spent large chunks of the opening part of 2024 linked with a move away, but committed his future to the club by penning a fresh three-year deal in the summer. That contract is set to expire in 2027.

Following Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League last season, news emerged that his extension included a £9 million release clause in the event that they would return to the second tier. This has seemingly sparked a scramble for his signature, with several clubs linked to the Nigerian international.

Bundesliga Emerges As Potential Ndidi Destination

It was reported at the weekend that Manchester United had appeared as a viable option for the midfielder, joining fellow Premier League sides Everton, Crystal Palace and Fulham in the race. The likes of Juventus, Besiktas, Fenerbahce and AS Monaco have also been touted with an interest, but they have now been joined by unnamed clubs in Germany.

Sky Sports Germany journalist Plettenberg has stated that Ndidi has received approaches from the Bundesliga, although has stated that Leicester’s asking price is €15 million (£13 million).

Ndidi was a regular fixture under both Steve Cooper and Ruud van Nistelrooy last season, making 28 Premier League appearances. His only goal of the season came in a 4-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in the Carabao Cup in August.

Leicester won’t be in any rush to lose a player that has been an integral part of their setup for such a long period of time, especially because the £9 million release clause isn’t an amount of money that will make-or-break their transfer window. However, getting his £75,000 per week wages off their books would provide a huge PSR boost, especially because they have already lowered their wage bill significantly following the departure of club legend Jamie Vardy. Still, losing him would leave a huge gap in the centre of midfield and one that would be difficult to fill, even taking into account the drop in division. Despite that, it does seem inevitable that Ndidi’s time at the King Power Stadium is coming to an end.
