Paul Mullin Opens Up On Wrexham Exit

Striker Paul Mullin has revealed his belief that Wrexham ‘released’ his exit to Wigan Athletic before the transfer was formally announced.

The 30-year-old has earned legendary status at the STōK Cae Ras since joining from Cambridge United in 2021. Opting to make the shock move from League One to the National League, the attacker went on to enjoy phenomenal success, scoring 105 times in 165 appearances.

This helped Wrexham climb the football pyramid at an astronomical rate, earning three successive promotions which will see them play in England’s second tier next season for the first time since 1982. However, Mullin played a bit-part role in their League One promotion campaign, with his last outing in red coming in January.

Mullin Reveals James McClean Talks

Having fallen out of favour, the former Tranmere Rovers man was heavily expected to depart the club this summer. With the dust still settling from the 2024/25 campaign, reports quickly emerged that a loan move to Wigan Athletic was on the cards. This was confirmed at the end of June.

Speaking to Wigan media, Mullin revealed he believes that his parent club may have leaked details of his exit to the media. This belief stems from conversations with former teammate James McClean, who previously spent two spells with the Latics:

“To be fair I spoke to Jim (James McClean), to be fair, after it was already done.

“But he sort of knew anyway, I think the world knew, I think Wrexham released it to the media or something because it got out there somehow.

“But yeah, he just said how good the club is and what to expect really and how grateful he was for looking after him and his family when they were here, obviously, helping his young kids come to the game and feel comfortable. He said hopefully it’ll be the same for me.”

Writer’s View

There’s little doubt that Mullin’s exit from Wrexham was handled terribly. Although he is still employed by the club, it’s unlikely he will make another appearance for the Welsh-based outfit. If he has indeed made his last outing, it’s a sad end to his career at STōK Cae Ras. Hopefully he will be given one last swansong when he does return at the end of this season and is given an opportunity to say goodbye to the fans properly.
