Wycombe Wanderers Set For Top Flight Defender

Wycombe Wanderers are reportedly on the verge of signing Leon King from Scottish giants Rangers.

The Chairboys are ready to dust themselves off and go again under Mike Dodds, after missing out on automatic promotion to Wrexham, followed by falling to eventual playoff winners Charlton Athletic, eventually finishing in fifth. They have moved frequently in the market, already signing seven new players so far including two from Scotland in the form of St Mirren’s Caolan Boyd-Munce and Motherwell’s Dan Casey, both on free transfers.

Defender Close To Move

According to the Daily Mail and later reported by the Bucks Free Press, Wanderers are set to sign Leon King on a permanent deal, after the 21-year-old struggled for minutes at Rangers. It is believed his desire for more game time is the driving force behind his decision to move, with just 42 appearances across five years at Ibrox.

The wish for more action saw him loaned out to Queen’s Park in the Scottish second tier, where he played nine times and became a regular fixture for the club during the latter stages of their season. A youth international, King has been part of former Southampton boss Russell Martin’s pre-season plans and played in their most recent game.

There are two spaces to be filled at centre-back in Wycombe’s starting 11 from last season after Sonny Bradley departed from the club to move to divisional rivals Lincoln City and Caleb Taylor returned to West Bromwich Albion on loan. Wanderers open their season at home to League One new boys Bradford City.

With the starting centre-back pairing from their play-off semi final defeat to Charlton now gone, Wycombe needed reinforcements in the position and look to have added to that with Leon King. With the chopping and changing of managers at Rangers, he has not been given regular action since 2022/23, when both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and former Sunderland boss Michael Beale were in charge. Wycombe are strong contenders in League One this season so King will arrive at a team with high expectations going into the new campaign.
