Southampton Could Be Set To Lose Promising Young Midfielder Amidst Premier League Interest

Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, is the subject of interest from newly promoted Premier League side Leeds United, according to Darren Witcoop.

Daniel Farke is reportedly looking to bolster his midfield as the Whites are also interested in Newcastle duo Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock as well as Hoffenheim’s Anton Stach.

Charles’ Career So Far

The Northern Irish international came through the youth ranks at Manchester City. He made numerous appearances for City’s youth teams, winning the Premier League 2 on multiple occasions and captaining the side at points.

After one appearance for the Cityzens, on the final day of the 2022/23 season, Charles moved to Southampton in the summer of 2023 in a blockbuster deal worth an initial £10.5 million.

He played 38 times for the Saints in the 2023/24 campaign as they instantly bounced back into the Premier League, though a sizeable number of his appearances in the league came from the bench.

Russell Martin did not think that Charles was ready to play in the top flight, so the midfielder, who can also play as a centre-back, went out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday last season.

Charles starred for Danny Rohl’s side amidst a number of off-field issues for the Owls. He appeared in 43 league games, scoring once and providing five assists as he was named Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Year and he was nominated for the Championship’s Young Player of the Season award.

The 21-year-old was statistically excellent in every area last campaign. He made more assists than 94.3% of his peers, won more fouls than 97.5% of Championship midfielders and won more duels than 98.4% of his counterparts.

His excellent performances, as well as Southampton’s relegation, have led to Charles being reintegrated into the first team during preseason.

Writer’s View

It would be best for both Leeds and Charles if the Whites chose to pursue other targets. Leeds will need to sign proven Premier League players if they want to be the first newly-promoted team to survive in the top flight since 2023.

Charles is tremendously talented but he does not have much experience in senior football. He would likely be competing with club captain Ethan Ampadu for a spot in Leeds’ first-choice team and the Whites would likely have to pay a large fee to pry him away from St. Mary’s, something they may not want to do for a player who is not a guaranteed starter.

Will Still, who has carved out an excellent reputation over the past few seasons, could refine Charles’ game even more over the next 12 months and Southampton have ambitions to win promotion to the Premier League this season. Charles would be better off in the long run if he became a key part of a promotion-winning Southampton side, thereby allowing him to play in the top flight in the future.
