Southampton Braced For Further Star Departure

Southampton‘s squad looks set to lose another key player as interest has emerged for one of their attacking talents.

The Saints had a dismal season in the Premier League and recorded one of the worst points totals in history, finishing with just 12 points. Despite new hope in the form of incoming manager Will Still, it has not stopped other teams picking away at their best assets ahead of the Championship season.

Last season’s top scorer in Paul Onuachu has moved to Trabzonspor, and the Hampshire club earned a big windfall with the sale of Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana to Atalanta managed by former boss Ivan Juric. Only one incoming has been confirmed so far, with centre-back Joshua Quarshie arriving from Hoffenheim.

Edozie May Go

According to Belgian football journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Club Brugge are targeting 22-year-old winger Samuel Edozie as a replacement for the outgoing Chemsedine Talbi, who has been tipped for a move to Sunderland. Edozie spent last season on loan in the Juliper Pro League, playing for Anderlecht as they finished in fourth place and scoring four goals and providing four assists in 32 appearances.

The English youth international arrived at St. Mary’s from Manchester City’s academy in 2022, and despite a tough start with limited appearances in his debut season, he found his feet in the Championship with 9 goal contributions in 16 starts and became a supersub for Russell Martin’s side as they achieved promotion through the playoffs.

Edozie has two years remaining on his contract, but with talks underway between both clubs for a permanent move, the Saints are looking increasingly likely to cash in on their player.

Writers’ View

Samuel Edozie is looking increasingly likely to leave and it will emphasise Southampton’s need for a new winger this summer. With Kamaldeen Sulemana and Samuel Amo-Ameyaw both leaving to Atalanta and Strasbourg, respectively, Will Still’s side will have just two natural wingers in Ben Brereton-Diaz and Ryan Fraser in the squad should this latest deal go through. With Southampton seemingly not giving him an integral role in the squad across the three years since joining the club, a permanent switch away for Edozie is likely the best move for him.
