£5 Million West Bromwich Albion Exit Stalls For Bizarre Reason

West Bromwich Albion winger Mikey Johnston’s £5 million move to Brazilian giants Flamengo has stalled amidst backlash from Flamengo fans, reports Anthony Joseph.

Johnston Set To Stay With West Brom

Joseph reports that the Brazilian club are set to withdraw their offer for Johnston after fans heavily criticised their pursuit of the Irish winger.

The 26-year-old was due to fly to Brazil on Tuesday to have his medical for the Red and Black, but he will instead be flying to Austria to join the Baggies for their preseason training camp.

The West Brom player is reportedly happy to remain at the Hawthorns for the 2025/26 season, though he was also interested in moving to South America.

Johnston’s Time With The Baggies

The winger joined West Brom from Celtic in February 2024.

He had made over 90 appearances for the Scottish giants but failed to ever fully establish himself as a regular starter in the Scottish Premiership.

His first stint with the Baggies was extremely successful. Johnston scored seven times in 20 games and completed more successful dribbles per 90 than 93.7% of Championship wingers as Carlos Corberan’s side reached the playoffs.

In August 2024 he made his move to West Brom permanent for a fee of around £3 million, though this season did not quite go to plan.

It was a tough campaign for the Midlands-based side as they lost Corberan midway through the season and struggled to regain any momentum.

Johnston himself started 25 league games and came off the bench a further 15 times. He ended the season with a mediocre three goals and five assists, though he still ranked well in terms of successful dribbles, touches and chances created.

Writer’s View

Last season was a very turbulent campaign for West Brom which likely did not help them to get the best out of Johnston.

The appointment of Ryan Mason as manager at the Hawthorns gives the 26-year-old a chance to start afresh during preseason, though he may already be slightly behind his teammates due to this transfer saga.

Johnston clearly has a tremendous amount of underlying talent and he could prove to be a major asset for West Brom next season if Mason can get the best out of him.
