Forest Green Rovers Make Triple Swoop: Savage Raids Old Club

Forest Green Rovers have completed a triple signing from Macclesfield FC, bringing in three of the Northern Premier League champions’ standout performers.

Robbie Savage has wasted no time in strengthening his squad at The New Lawn, raiding his former club for players he knows well.

Forest Green Move Quickly Under Savage

Laurent Mendy, Tre Pemberton, and Neil Kengni have all arrived on permanent deals from Macclesfield, fresh from helping the Silkmen secure promotion with a staggering 109-point season.

Mendy, a 28-year-old defender, played every league game last term and racked up over 4,000 minutes on the pitch. His defensive solidity was a cornerstone of Macclesfield’s campaign, with 21 clean sheets recorded and three goals scored by the Senegalese powerhouse. He was named in the division’s Team of the Season and offers versatility as well as sheer physical presence.

Pemberton also played a vital role over two consistent seasons. The 26-year-old right-sided player made 87 league appearances across that period, having previously developed through Blackburn Rovers’ academy. After further spells with Stoke City, FC United of Manchester, and Stafford Rangers, he found his rhythm at Macclesfield, becoming a fan favourite for his pace and work rate.

Completing the trio is Kengni, another Premier Division Team of the Season inclusion. The 25-year-old brings attacking flair and balance from the left, adding depth and energy to Forest Green’s wide options. He enjoyed earlier stints with Rochdale, Stalybridge, and Marine before hitting his stride during Macclesfield’s title push.

These signings mark a clear shift in direction for Forest Green under Savage, who replaced Steve Cotterill following last season’s play-off disappointment. Rather than pursuing marquee names, the new boss appears to be prioritising character, cohesion and players already familiar with his expectations.

Writer’s View

This trio’s arrival offers more than just reinforcements — it’s a clear statement of intent from Robbie Savage. By targeting players who helped Macclesfield dominate their league, Savage is placing his trust in a winning formula. While the leap from the Northern Premier League to the EFL is significant, these are no ordinary signings.

Mendy brings steel, Pemberton brings energy, and Kengni brings width — all underpinned by a shared understanding of Savage’s methods. It’s a gamble rooted in chemistry, not reputation, and could lay the foundation for a Forest Green resurgence.
