Salford City have turned down two bids for key defender Haji Mnoga according to a report.
The full-back joined the Moor Lane club on a free transfer after being released by Portsmouth last summer and made an immediate impact for Karl Robinson’s side, making 42 appearances in his debut season. This earned him a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the League Two club until 2026.
Ammies Turn Away Bids
According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, City have rejected two bids from an unnamed League One club as they look to hold onto the Tanzanian international. The 23-year-old, who has played five games in the third division for Pompey, has also made appearances for Gillingham before falling into regular non-league loans to Bromley, Weymouth and Aldershot Town.
Coming to Salford as a long-term replacement for Luke Bolton at right-wing back following his move to Wrexham, Mnoga became a near-irreplaceable figure in defence for The Ammies, who missed out on the playoffs in agonising fashion on the final day of the season.
With Liam Shephard and Jon Taylor both leaving the club upon the expiration of their contracts, it leaves only Mnoga and Dan Chesters as natural right wing-back options for Karl Robinson’s side heading into next season. However, they have reinforced in other defensive areas, with their most recent signing being centre-half Loick Ayina from Huddersfield Town.
Writers’ View
Haji Mnoga is a vital player for Salford City now after a stellar debut season so it is understandable why they are rejecting bids for the 23-year-old. His consistency and occasional contributions for the club pushed them towards the playoffs after what a disastrous previous season. Keeping Mnoga will help them in their ambitions to reach League One next season. It seems that his signing has set an example for The Ammies’ transfer policy, with the club picking talent from non-league, such as Kallum Cesay and Adebola Oluwo, to bolster their options heading into next season.
