Newport County have completed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Jordan Wright ahead of the 2025/26 League Two season.
The 26-year-old joins following a year with Grimsby Town and is aiming to cement his place between the sticks under new manager David Hughes.
Jordan Wright Experience
Wright, a product of the Nottingham Forest academy, made his senior breakthrough with Lincoln City, where he impressed as a deputy to Josh Griffiths before stepping up in the 2022/23 campaign. Last season he gained his first full year as a regular starter, making over 40 appearances for Grimsby in League Two.
The goalkeeper spoke of his excitement at joining Newport after discussions with Hughes about the club’s direction.
“We had a really good conversation about the way he wants the team to play, the standards around the place, and the ambition he has for the season. It’s an exciting time to be here and I’m buzzing to be part of it.”
Wright credited his time at Grimsby as a key period in his development.
“Last season was my first full season as a number one – it was a tough year at times, but I learned a lot from it.”
Having previously spent time on loan at clubs such as Alfreton Town and Alloa Athletic during his early Forest years, Wright now boasts a well-rounded CV at EFL level. He made his Imps debut in 2022 and earned praise for a string of strong performances in both league and cup competitions.
He now arrives at Rodney Parade with a clear intention to be first choice from the off.
“Personally, I want to make the shirt mine, work hard every day, and keep as many clean sheets as possible. As a team, we all want to finish as high in the table as we can and push for something special.”
The Exiles begin their pre-season schedule with a trip to Pontypridd United on Tuesday, 1 July, before further friendlies in the lead-up to the League Two opener.
Writer’s View
This is a sensible piece of business by Newport County. In Jordan Wright, they’ve acquired a goalkeeper with a solid EFL grounding, the right attitude, and experience of both battling for the shirt and owning it. His spell at Grimsby wasn’t without its ups and downs, but crucially he came through it stronger and more assured.
Wright isn’t flashy, but he’s dependable—and that’s exactly what David Hughes will want as he shapes a squad capable of climbing the League Two table. If he performs as he did at Lincoln, County may have found themselves a long-term number one.
