Leicester City will face competition for managerial target Danny Rohl from Premier League outfit Brentford, according to reports.
The Foxes are on the hunt for a new face in the dugout after Ruud van Nistelrooy finally departed the club last week. The Dutchman’s departure finally ended weeks of speculation, with some parties claiming the decision had been delayed due to the financial implications of sacking two managers in the same financial year. However, those fears appear to have alleviated after the official announcement confirmed van Nistelrooy’s exit was by mutual consent.
Former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche was immediately installed as the favourite following reports earlier this month that he was keen on the position. It seems these are wide of the mark though, with the 54-year-old said to have ruled himself out of the running.
Danny Rohl Emerges As Brentford Target
Danny Rohl continues to be one of the main frontrunners to take the vacant position at the King Power Stadium. The German looks set to leave fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the coming days, with The Daily Mail revealing overnight that he has informed his senior players that his time at Hillsborough is over.
This follows a series of off-field issues, with owner Dejphon Chansiri still under huge pressure having failed to pay all of the players wages. Rohl has also endured a tough relationship with the Thai businessman and has been actively looking for alternative jobs for a number of weeks. As such, he was not present for last week’s return to pre-season training.
Via Leicestershire Live, Brentford are now considering an approach which would see him take on a coaching role under new manager Keith Andrews. The Bees promoted the former Republic of Ireland international after previous boss Thomas Frank opted to leave for Tottenham Hotspur.
Writer’s View
Danny Rohl could elevate his career if he opts to switch Sheffield Wednesday for Leicester. Although they are also dealing with their own off-field issues, the Foxes are still expected to be challenging at the top end of the Championship and will be one of the favourites to earn promotion back to the Premier League. If Brentford’s interest is true, it will be flattering but it is unlikely that he will want to take an assistant role. However, if the Bees give him assurances that he is next in line after Andrews, it could be an enticing offer for the German.
