Reading Captain Commits Future To Club

Reading captain Andy Yiadom has committed his immediate future to the club by penning a one year deal, the club have announced.

The 33-year-old was due to see his contract expire at the end of the month, although the Royals confirmed in their end-of-season retained list that they were in discussions over fresh terms. Signed from Barnsley in 2018, the defender has been an almost ever-present over the past seven years, racking up 222 appearances.

This past season has been one to forget for the Ghana international though. He spent much of the campaign watching from the sidelines and had to wait until March to make his first outing. Overall, he made 14 appearances, four of which came from the start.

Yiadom ‘Raring To Go’

It’s been a busy month for Reading, who had 11 first team players close to the end of their contracts. So far, only Lewis Wing and Joel Periera have extended their stays at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, with Yiadom the latest to sign.

Announcing the news on official platforms, the Berkshire-based side said the right-back is ‘raring to go’, with chairman, Rob Couhig revealing his excitement at the new agreement:

“We are truly excited to have Andy extend his career with the Club. The last year of rehabilitation has been difficult.

However, he demonstrated he is a true professional. He worked hard, supported his teammates, and demonstrated a commitment to his craft. He seems ready to go and we are certainly ready to have him helping the club reach its goals.”

Manager Noel Hunt also expressed his delight:

“Yids’ impact both on and off the pitch is second to none, and we are delighted to have him signed up for another season.

Last year was tough for him, but he came back strongly in the second half of the season and is back for pre season looking fresh and ready for the fight.”

Writer’s View

Andy Yiadom has been a fantastic servant for Reading since arriving in 2018 and it was difficult to see him departing this summer. Although he is reaching the twilight years of his career and has suffered with injuries, his experience alone is a huge factor, especially amongst the younger players in the squad. If he can stay off the treatment table, he will be a major asset for Noel Hunt next season as they hope to challenge for a top six spot.
