Carlisle United have confirmed the signing of former Peterborough United winger David Ajiboye on a two-year deal.
The 26-year-old becomes the third addition of the summer at Brunton Park as preparations ramp up for the new season.
Carlisle Land Former Sutton Star Ajiboye
Ajiboye arrives in Cumbria following his release by Peterborough, having spent last season on loan at Newport County. The pacy wide man made 21 appearances for the Welsh side, including two outings against Carlisle—one of which saw him start in the Blues’ 3-2 win at Brunton Park.
His permanent move adds further attacking firepower to Mark Hughes’ side, with the head coach expressing delight at the capture.
“His speed is exceptional, and he gives us a real edge going forward. He’s been part of a promotion-winning side and knows what it takes to compete at a higher level,” Hughes told the club website.
Ajiboye played a key role in Sutton United’s rise to the Football League in 2021 and impressed during their maiden League Two campaign, notably scoring against Carlisle in both fixtures that season. His form earned a move to Peterborough, where he featured in their 2024 EFL Trophy triumph before going out on loan.
Attacking Options Strengthened
Head of football operations Marc Tierney praised Ajiboye’s flair and attacking threat, describing him as “a fantastic addition” who brings “blistering pace and sharp agility” to the squad.
His arrival follows the signings of Regan Linney and Morgan Feeney as Carlisle aim to bounce back from a disappointing 2024/25 campaign. The club will return to pre-season training later this week, with Ajiboye expected to be among the key figures vying for a starting role.
Having started his senior career with Worthing after time in Brighton’s youth ranks, Ajiboye’s return to League Two football represents a fresh chapter for a player with proven pedigree at this level. His versatility and experience could prove vital as Hughes shapes his squad for a more competitive push this term.
Writer’s View
This is a savvy signing by Carlisle United. Ajiboye’s pace and directness offer something the squad has been lacking, and his strong showings against the Blues in years past show he’s more than capable of making an impact.
If Carlisle can provide him with the platform, this could prove to be one of the better value additions of the League Two window.
