Fleetwood Town Add 18-Goal Striker To Their Ranks

Fleetwood Town have completed the signing of in-demand striker Will Davies from Sutton United, with the 26-year-old agreeing a two-year contract at Highbury Stadium.

Davies, who began his career in the Ipswich Town youth setup, arrives with a growing reputation after a standout campaign in the National League. He netted 20 goals in 49 appearances for Sutton last season and joins Fleetwood for an undisclosed fee, becoming their second summer signing following Toby Mullarkey’s move from Crawley Town.

Meandering Non League Career

The striker’s journey to the EFL has been far from straightforward. After emerging as a star with Leiston in the Southern League Premier Division Central – where he scored over 50 goals across two seasons – Davies was snapped up by Braintree Town, and later York City. He made an immediate impression at York before a short loan stint at Bromley and an eventual move to Sutton in the summer of 2024.

Davies’ rise was punctuated by a superb January 2024, in which he was named Vanarama National League Player of the Month. His eye for goal and ability to adapt quickly to new levels of football attracted attention from across the pyramid, but it was the Cod Army who won the race for his signature.

“A big part of that was the manager, in terms of how he explained it,” said Davies. “I’ve been able to step through levels and score goals wherever I’ve gone – the goal doesn’t move, so hopefully long may it continue.”

Fleetwood, who were relegated from League One at the end of the 2023/24 season, are determined to build a squad capable of bouncing straight back. Securing Davies – a proven goalscorer with a hunger to prove himself at EFL level – represents a significant statement of intent.

The striker will wear the number nine shirt and officially joins the club with immediate effect, aiming to translate his non-league success into Football League impact.

Writer’s View

Fleetwood’s move for Will Davies is a perfect example of smart EFL recruitment. Rather than chasing high-profile names, they’ve targeted a striker who has consistently scored goals at every level he’s played. His record – from Leiston to Sutton via Braintree, York, and Bromley – proves he’s more than just a non-league hotshot.

This is a player on the rise, hungry, humble, and ready to prove himself again. For a club like Fleetwood, recently relegated but still ambitious, it’s the kind of low-risk, high-reward gamble that could pay serious dividends. If Davies can replicate even a portion of his Sutton form in League Two, the Cod Army may have secured one of the signings of the summer.
