FC Halifax Town have appointed Adam Lakeland as their new manager following Chris Millington’s departure.
The 38-year-old arrives from King’s Lynn Town, where he led the Linnets to a National League North play-off finish last season.
New Era at The Shay Begins
Lakeland brings a strong non-league pedigree to The Shay, having built a reputation for overachieving with limited resources. After beginning his coaching career with Blackburn Rovers Women, he rose through the ranks with Curzon Ashton, helping the club to successive promotions. Spells with Northwich Victoria and Farsley Celtic followed, the latter culminating in promotion to National League North in 2019.
His latest success at King’s Lynn Town underlined his ability to compete at the sharp end of the non-league pyramid. The Norfolk-based side narrowly missed out on promotion under Lakeland’s guidance, but his stock continued to rise after an impressive campaign.
He now replaces Millington, who stepped down in May following a National League play-off semi-final defeat to Oldham Athletic. Lakeland will be tasked with taking Halifax one step further in 2025–26 as they target a long-awaited return to the Football League.
Lakeland is expected to be joined by assistant Sam Walker, a familiar face to Shaymen fans. Walker previously represented the club during his playing career and could offer valuable continuity and insight.

Assistant Departure
This week also saw the departure of assistant manager Andy Cooper, who followed Millington out of the club after three seasons. Cooper described his time at Halifax as “truly memorable,” having helped the club reach two play-off campaigns and lift the FA Trophy at Wembley.
“My three years at FC Halifax Town have been truly memorable and I am better for the experience,” Cooper said. “To share this journey under the guidance of Chris Millington was remarkably special and I wish to thank Milly for bringing me to the club and for his overall contribution.”
Chairman David Bosomworth paid tribute to Cooper, stating, “Andy has more than played his part as a great foil for Chris, with a calm and professional approach to everything he does. We are very sure it won’t be too long before he is on the touchline again.”
Lakeland will now begin shaping his squad ahead of pre-season, with the aim of going one better than the club’s recent play-off efforts. With Halifax among the more consistent sides in the division over recent years, fans will hope the new regime can deliver a long-overdue promotion push.
Writer’s View
Adam Lakeland’s appointment feels like a smart and forward-thinking move by FC Halifax Town. His track record in building cohesive, hard-working squads on modest budgets aligns well with the club’s ethos, and his familiarity with the northern non-league scene is a real asset.
Bringing in Sam Walker adds a layer of continuity that could be crucial during a transitional summer. If Halifax can back Lakeland in the market, this could be the year they finally crack the top tier of non-league football.
