Sheffield United Emerge As Favourites For Key Transfer Target

Sheffield United have emerged as the frontrunners to secure the signing of Bournemouth defender Chris Mepham this summer, according to EFL Analysis.

The 27-year-old has returned to the Vitality Stadium following a successful loan spell at Sunderland. He played a key role in the Black Cats’ promotion to the Premier League, featuring 40 times. This included a starting berth in the Championship play-off final victory over, ironically, Sheffield United.

Although he is not expected to have a future at his parent club, the Cherries made the decision to trigger the one-year extension in his current contract. It is thought this was done in order to protect his value ahead of a potential sale this summer.

Mepham To Return To The Championship

The Welsh international has enjoyed a career revitalisation at the Stadium of Light. He fell oout of favour at Bournemouth, leading to just 10 Premier League outings during the 2023/24 campaign.

Earlier this month, it was claimed that the centre-back would like to return to Wearside should the opportunity arise. However, it is now thought that Sunderland may explore other options that would prove value for money in the top tier.

Burnley have also been touted with an interest, but it now appears as if a return to the Championship is the most likely scenario. Explaining the situation, transfer expert Graeme Bailey said:

“They (Bournemouth wanted to keep the value (by giving him the extension). They’ll assess it clearly. I still think he’s more likely, from what I hear, to be heading to a top Championship team than he is a Premier League club. I don’t think Sunderland will go for it.”

Continuing, he revealed that his most likely destination is Bramall Lane:

“I’d say Sheffield United are likely, to be fair, but there’s quite a bit of interest in him actually. But, it’s still early June and I don’t think we’ll see anything there yet. Championship teams are pretty reticent to spend money. They obviously want to see what loan deals are out there first; it’s tough for EFL teams.”

Writer’s View

Although Mepham was lauded for his season at Sunderland, their stance is understandable. He is certainly a player capable of playing at Premier League level, but he probably needs another season in the Championship to maintain that consistency he showed at the Stadium of Light. Therefore, a move to Sheffield United suits all parties. The Blades will be desperate not to fall short next time out and bringing in a player who has already tasted success at this level on two occassions would provide a huge boost to their own promotion aspirations.
