Bristol Rovers Linked With Swoop For £800,000 Striker

Bristol Rovers are among the clubs interested in re-signing Rotherham United striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, with the 30-year-old expected to leave the New York Stadium this summer if a suitable offer is tabled.

Clarke-Harris, who enjoyed a prolific spell in BS7 between 2019 and 2020, is understood to be admired by Rovers’ management, who are seeking attacking reinforcements ahead of their return to League Two. Despite a mixed campaign in South Yorkshire—scoring eight goals in 33 appearances—his reputation as a proven EFL marksman remains intact.

Clarke-Harris Interest

New Rotherham boss Matt Hamshaw admitted the Millers had received interest but confirmed no formal bids have yet been made.

“There has been interest but it has only been interest,” Hamshaw said. “No-one has put an offer on the table for us yet. Until we get one, he is still our player.”

Clarke-Harris came close to rejoining the Gas in September 2023, when an £800,000 club-record fee was agreed, only for the deal to collapse at the eleventh hour due to administrative delays. He went on to register 101 goal contributions during his second spell at Peterborough United, helping the club to Championship promotion in 2021 and twice claiming the League One Golden Boot.

The striker’s original stint at Rovers saw him net 27 goals in 52 appearances, helping the club stave off relegation. His subsequent £1.4 million move to Peterborough remains one of the most lucrative sales in Rovers’ history.

Now, with the Gas enduring a major rebuild following relegation, interest in Clarke-Harris has re-emerged. Head coach Darrell Clarke has seen 15 players depart, including Chris Martin, out of contract and recovering from injury, and Jamie Lindsay, who exited by mutual consent.

The transfer window reopens on June 16, with clubs expected to accelerate their activity before the new EFL season begins in early August. Rovers currently have Ruel Sotiriou and Promise Omochere as recognised forwards, but a marquee return for Clarke-Harris would offer fans a familiar figure with a proven eye for goal.

Writer’s View

A return for Jonson Clarke-Harris would be a huge statement for Bristol Rovers—both symbolically and tactically. His past goal-scoring record in blue and white makes him a fan favourite, and while his recent numbers haven’t hit the same heights, he still offers physicality and a cutting edge that few at League Two level can match.

The key question remains whether the club can structure a deal that satisfies Rotherham and fits within their financial model. If they can, this could be the sort of signing that transforms Rovers from rebuilders to real promotion contenders.
