Huddersfield Town Boss Reveals ‘Generous Offer’

Huddersfield Town manager Lee Grant has confirmed a ‘generous offer’ from Stoke City led to the exit of winger Sorba Thomas.

The 26-year-old has been with the Terriers since joining from Boreham Wood in January 2021. He was a virtual ever-present throughout the next free seasons, but following their relegation from the Championship a year ago, he was allowed to depart on loan.

The winger joined French Ligue 1 outfit Nantes on a season-long deal which included an option to buy. Although he made 27 appearances for the top flight side, news emerged in April claiming that his temporary club were considering not activating the clause.

Thomas had also been linked with Hull City during his stay across the English Channel, but his move to Stoke was confirmed yesterday.

Grant Pleased At Early Business

Although Thomas’ exit from the John Smith’s Stadium was not unexpected, Grant revealed he was pleased to get the deal done quickly. The former Manchester United coach is hoping to get his summer transfer business done early, with him stating this also includes outgoings. Via Stoke On Trent Livehe said:

“Stoke City have presented the club with a generous offer for Sorba’s services and the player has shown a desire to pursue that opportunity, so it’s a deal that works for all concerned. I wish him nothing but the best with his new side.

“We’ve spoken publicly about our desire to have our business concluded as early as possible in this transfer window ahead of an incredibly important summer and pre-season, and that’s as true for departures as it is incoming players. The earlier we can have our squad settled and defined, the better.

“Having this agreed early allows us greater flexibility and clarity in the transfer market as we look to continue our work rebuilding the squad and bringing top class talent to the club ahead of the new season.”

This is an excellent deal for Huddersfield. Sorba Thomas was never likely to be a part of the squad next season and receiving a ‘generous’ fee now means they can reinvest it straight back into the team. Although the Welsh international would be an excellent player to have at League One level, having his future drag on for the summer would have been unneccessary. The 2025/26 campaign is an exceptionally important one for the Terriers, who are targeting a top two finish. Getting their business done early will give new boss Lee Grant ample time to gel his squad ahead of the new season.
