Tranmere Rovers have confirmed the return of former defender Ethan Bristow on a one-year deal, bringing the fan favourite back to Prenton Park after a year away.
The 23-year-old becomes the latest addition to Andy Crosby’s reshaped squad as preparations continue for the 2025/26 League Two campaign.
Bristow Returns After Championship Success With Stockport
Bristow, who originally joined Tranmere from Reading in 2022, returns following a spell with Stockport County where he featured in 13 matches and helped the Hatters lift the League Two title last season. The left-back had spent the first half of the campaign with MLS side Minnesota United before his move back to England in December 2023.
Speaking about his return, Bristow said he didn’t hesitate when the opportunity to rejoin Rovers arose:
“It feels brilliant. When I saw the offer, it was the ultimate yes, straight off the bat. I’m very glad to be back. The happy memories, the fans, everything that I’ve missed for the last year—it’s just this place. It’s home. It’s like a second family to me now. I just can’t wait to play in front of the fans.”
The Maidenhead-born defender made a strong impression during his first stint at the club, making 40 appearances in all competitions in the 2022/23 season. Known for his pace and physical presence, Bristow provides another dynamic option in a defensive unit already bolstered by the arrivals of Nathan Smith and the retained services of Lee O’Connor, Jordan Turnbull and Cameron Norman.
Manager Andy Crosby was delighted to secure Bristow’s return, highlighting his athleticism and positive attitude:
“We are delighted to bring Ethan back to the football club. He is another player who has had previous success in League Two. He’s a player who I loved watching—his speed, athleticism and ball-carrying were stand-out parts of his game. On all of our phone calls, Zoom calls and face-to-face conversations, he has expressed how much he loved playing for our fans and how happy he was when he was at the club.”
Crosby also emphasised that all new signings must reflect the club’s core values:
“As with all the players we’ve re-signed or signed, they have to recognise our football club’s values: hard work, dedication and commitment in every game. I look forward to helping Ethan develop his game further over the next stage of his career and to fulfil the undoubted promise he has.”

Writer’s View
Ethan Bristow’s return is the kind of smart, sentimental signing that can unify a squad and energise a fanbase. He brings recent title-winning experience, but more importantly, he already knows what it means to play for Tranmere Rovers.
Andy Crosby’s summer recruitment strategy appears both measured and ambitious, and Bristow’s blend of pace, versatility and familiarity could make him an early-season standout. If he recaptures the form shown in his first spell, this reunion could be a key piece in Tranmere’s promotion push.
