Plymouth Argyle have reportedly placed former Norwich City coach Jack Wilshere towards the top of their managerial shortlist, according to EFL Analysis.
The Pilgrims were last week when head coach Miron Muslic abruptly departed the club after just four months following an approach from 2. Bundesliga outfit Schalke. This prompted the club to release a statement revealing their frustration, where they said:
“Despite regular communication since the end of the season, and no mention of any issues, Miron has now made it clear that, after extended periods away from his family, this opportunity provides him the chance to be closer to them after four years on the road.
“We are frustrated by this decision, having implemented clear structures, processes and personnel to aid Miron and his coaching staff as we look to return to the Sky Bet Championship at the earliest opportunity.”
It was a bitter blow for Plymouth, who were hoping they could enter the summer transfer with a degree of stability following their relegation to League One. Instead, they now have to contend with a search for a new head coach before they can properly build their squad ahead of the new campaign.
Wilshere Emerges As Frontrunner
A few names have been linked with the post over the past few days, including the likes of Ian Evatt, Des Buckingham and David Wagner. However, a new name has now leapt to the head of the queue.
Former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere is now the favourite to enter the dugout at Home Park after departing Norwich City last week. The 33-year-old was given his first taste of management towards the end of last season when the Canaries parted company with Johannes Hoff Thorup in April. Wilshere oversaw the last two games, where he picked up four points.
Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper confirmed shortly after that they weren’t considering their interim for the role full-time. Instead, Bristol City head coach Liam Manning looks set to make the move to East Anglia in the coming days.
It appears as if Wilshere won’t be out of work for long though. According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, he stands an excellent job of landing the position, whilst other sources told EFL Analysis that the links have ‘real legs’.
Writer’s View
Jack Wilshere is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young coaches in football. Although he is yet to hold a permanent job at the top level, he has been lauded for the work he has done with Arsenal’s youth teams before his move to Norwich. This could be an exciting appointment for Plymouth, whilst he should also be able to attract some top talent to help them get out of League One at the first time of asking.
