Chesterfield could re-sign a loanee from last season as they look to rebuild for next season.
The Spireites were bested by Walsall in the League Two playoffs in their first season back in the Football League, finishing seventh place. They were the fourth tier’s joint second-highest scorers finding the net 73 times. Plenty of players are departing the club, including Darren Oldaker and Kane Drummond with talks taking place with out-of-contract players like John Fleck and Kyle McFadzean.
Former Loanee Could Return
A report from the Derbyshire Times has suggested that Cook could launch a move for one of his former loanees in Jenson Metcalfe, who became a pivotal part of his squad in the latter stages of the season. The Everton midfielder played 31 times for the club and scored his first senior goal against Bradford City.
However, it is far from a formality that a deal could be reached between The Toffees and Chesterfield, with the report stating that a move is ‘not out of the question’ at this stage and it is unclear whether it will be a loan or permanent move, with Metcalfe’s contract on Merseyside still having 12 months left.
Midfield is a key market for the club to target following the news that Ollie Banks has moved to National League side York City, and Paul Cook has stated that he is in negotiations with a number of potential players. He is not the only former loanee tipped with a return to Derbyshire, with Dilan Markanday rumoured to make a return after being released by Blackburn Rovers.

Writers’ View
Jenson Metcalfe was brilliant in the latter stages of last season, rightfully earning his place alongside veteran midfielder John Fleck at Chesterfield. His future at Everton does not look bright with David Moyes targeting Rangers and Ivory Coast midfielder Mohamed Diomande, according to TeamTALK. Whilst he could certainly earn a move to a League One club, rejoining Cook and The Spireites will be the best place for him to land this summer and continue his good form.
