Oxford United Defender Pens ‘Long-Term’ Deal

Oxford United defender Sam Long has extended his 21-year stay at the club by penning a new ‘long-term’ deal, the club have confirmed.

The 30-year-old rose through the U’s academy, making his debut in 2013. Although his input was limited, he was a part of the squad that earned promotion from League Two in 2016.

It wasn’t until the 2018/19 season where Long broke into the first team on a regular basis. Since then, he has racked up well over 250 appearances for the club and started the famous League One play-off final win over Bolton Wanderers last year.

This season offered him his first opportunity of Championship football. Although he has been in and out of the team, he still featured 27 times in all competitions whilst also scoring the winner against Sheffield Wednesday in April.

Long Reveals Delight At Contract Extension

Long still had a year remaining on his existing deal, but Oxford were keen to retain his services at the Kassam Stadium. Speaking following the announcement, the right-back said:

“I am so proud to play for Oxford United. This club has been my life for as long as I can remember. I have given absolutely everything for the badge since I first pulled it on at the age of nine in the Academy, and I’m excited to give more in the years to come.

“I had no hesitation at all when it came around to signing a new deal. This is the only place I want to be.

“I’ve been privileged to be part of this Club for all 13 years of my professional career. From League Two to Championship, it’s been an incredible journey which has many more exciting times ahead.

“None of this has been made possible without your unbelievable support throughout my career. Now, as ever, I will continue to do everything I can to lift our club forward together.”

Although the length of the contract hasn’t been specified, This Is Oxfordshire claim that it will run until at least the end of the 2026/27 campaign.

Writer’s View

Sam Long has been a loyal servant of Oxford for so many years and this new deal is just reward for his contribution. He is a popular figure at the Kassam Stadium and this decision will be a popular one with supporters. Although his game time may become more limited over the next couple of seasons, his experience will be invaluable to those surrounding him. A sensible decision from Oxford.
