‘Ready To Finish’ – Former Wrexham Defender Makes Major Career Decision

Veteran centre-back Ben Tozer has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing to an end a career that spanned nearly two decades and over 500 appearances.

The former Northampton Town, Cheltenham Town and Wrexham defender made the announcement this week, confirming he was “ready to finish” after a long and accomplished journey through the English Football League.

Popular Defender Calls Time On Career

Tozer, 35, most recently played for Forest Green Rovers in the National League but is best remembered for lengthy spells at Northampton and Cheltenham, where he was a dependable presence in defence and a leader on and off the pitch.

The Plymouth-born defender started his senior career at Swindon Town in 2007, and his potential was quickly recognised by Newcastle United, who signed him for £250,000 just a year later. Although he made just two senior appearances for the Magpies, it marked the beginning of a well-travelled and industrious career.

He became a firm favourite at Sixfields across two loan spells before joining Northampton permanently in 2011. Over the next four years, he made 200 appearances for the Cobblers, establishing himself as a reliable and versatile option across defence and midfield.

“Yeah, I’m retiring, hanging my boots up, whatever you want to call it,” Tozer said. “I think you know when you know. If you’re honest with yourself, that’s when you’ve got to look at yourself and think ‘it’s too much to go again’. I’m just ready to finish.”

Spells Across the EFL and A Taste of Promotion

Following his time at Northampton, Tozer went on to play for Colchester United, Yeovil Town, Newport County, and Cheltenham Town, where he won promotion to League One in 2021. He also played a pivotal role in Wrexham’s high-profile National League campaigns, helping to bring the club to wider prominence during their Hollywood-fuelled revival.

In total, he amassed well over 500 senior appearances, many of which came in League One and League Two, underlining his longevity and value as a seasoned professional.

Writer’s View

Ben Tozer may not have been the most high-profile name in English football, but his career is a shining example of consistency, professionalism and dedication. From Premier League beginnings to lower-league promotions, he adapted, led, and delivered wherever he went.

His impact at Northampton Town was especially significant, where his 200 appearances saw him become a fan favourite and trusted figure. Later spells at Cheltenham and Wrexham showed he still had plenty to offer, and he leaves the game with the respect of teammates, managers and supporters alike.

Retirement may end his time on the pitch, but with his experience and leadership qualities, don’t be surprised if coaching or mentoring is next on the horizon for Tozer.
