Bradford City Open Talks With 31-Year-Old From League One Rivals

Bradford City have opened talks with Matty Pearson over a potential move to Valley Parade following his release by Huddersfield Town.

The 31-year-old defender is one of the most experienced free agents currently available, with over 500 senior appearances across a career spanning more than a decade in the EFL. According to Alan Nixon, the Bantams are keen to snap him up ahead of their League One return after securing automatic promotion.

High profile departures

Pearson was one of several high-profile departures from Huddersfield following a disappointing season that saw them slump to a mid-table finish in the third tier. His four-year spell at the John Smith’s Stadium came to an end with 135 appearances, 17 goals, and a reputation as a committed and vocal leader at the heart of defence.

Bradford boss Graham Alexander is expected to overhaul his squad in preparation for life in League One, with Pearson viewed as an ideal addition to provide leadership, physicality, and aerial strength at the back.

The defender has already expressed his desire to continue playing into his late 30s.

“I’m planning on playing until I’m 40,” he said last month. “I’ve started doing my coaching badges and I’m enjoying passing on the knowledge I wish I’d had earlier in my career.”

That long-term outlook could appeal to Alexander, who is building a squad not just to survive but to compete in the top half of the table next season. Pearson would follow Max Power as the second statement signing of the summer — the former Wigan and Sunderland midfielder was announced shortly after promotion was confirmed.

Having come through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers, Pearson’s career gathered momentum at FC Halifax Town before successful stints at Accrington Stanley, Barnsley, Luton Town, and Huddersfield. His performances have been marked by consistent defensive reliability and an ability to chip in with goals from set pieces.

Bradford’s early promotion has given them a valuable head start in the market, and securing Pearson’s signature would further enhance their credibility as a club ready to thrive in League One. His experience of winning promotion and handling the physical demands of the division would provide a vital platform for the younger players around him.

Writer’s View

This would be a smart, strategic move for Bradford City. Matty Pearson brings not only defensive quality but the sort of leadership that can shape a dressing room in transition. With Max Power already on board, adding Pearson would continue a clear pattern: experienced, battle-hardened professionals who can handle the demands of League One football.

At 31, Pearson still has plenty to offer — and in a league that rewards resilience and nous, he might be exactly what the Bantams need to stabilise and push on.
