Hull City have held talks with former Queens Park Rangers and Sunderland boss Michael Beale about their vacant managerial position, according to Football Insider.
The Tigers endured a torrid campaign which saw them avoid relegation to League One on goal difference. This followed last summer’s decision to part company with Liam Rosenior after they narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs.
They opted to bring in German coach Tim Walter as his replacement but he was sacked in November after winning just three of his 18 games in charge. This saw Ruben Selles make the switch from Reading to the MKM Stadium, tasked with keeping the club in the Championship.
Although the 41-year-old achieved his objective, he too was shown the exit door last week. This has left the East Yorkshire-based club on the search for their third head coach in the space of 12 months.
Beale Looking For Managerial Return
Michael Beale’s last managerial reign came to an end in February 2024. His time at Sunderland was viewed as a disaster, lasting just two months.
The 44-year-old failed to win over supporters at the Stadium of Light, especially after replacing the popular Tony Mowbray. Since then, he spent a brief time in Saudi Arabia working as Steven Gerrard’s assistant at Al-Ettifaq.
It isn’t the first time the duo have partnered up. They also formed the management team at both Rangers and Aston Villa prior to him taking his first managerial role at QPR. The former England international has been linked with a return to Ibrox, hinting that Beale could also move north of the border. However, he also isn’t a popular figure amongst the Ger’s faithful.
It now appears as if Hull are also keen on acquiring his services. It is claimed that they have held initial talks over the position and he is now on the list of potential candidates.
Others linked with the role include Plymouth Argyle head coach Miron Muslic and another former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray.
Writer’s View
This would be a bizarre appointment for Hull. They brought in one of the EFL’s brightest young coaches in Ruben Selles, barely giving him any time to mould his own squad. Although their performances weren’t pretty, this season was about surviving, something which the Spaniard eventually achieved. To replace him with a manager who has seen his credentials take a beating in recent years would be mind-blowing.
