Danny Rohl Takes One Step Closer To Sheffield Wednesday Exit

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has taken another step towards a Hillsborough exit after it was revealed that he is down to the final two for the vacant position at Southampton.

The 36-year-old joined the Owls in October 2023 in what was his first managerial role. He has impressed during his time in Yorkshire, first saving the club from relegation from the Championship last season.

This season has also been a huge improvement. Wednesday have cemented their place in the second tier, flirting with an unlikely push for a top six finish. However, they eventually secured a 12th-placed finish.

As a result of their progress, Rohl has consistently been linked with a move away from the club. Southampton have been one of his main suitors, where they were first touted with an interest following the dismissal of Russell Martin in December last year.

Saints Shortlist Down To Two

Reports emerged over the weekend that former Watford boss Tom Cleverley had emerged as a candidate for the role at St Mary’s. The 35-year-old was harshly sacked by the Hornets earlier this month but has left with his reputation in tact.

It was claimed that the ex-Manchester United and England midfielder had impressed during the initial round of talks, but he now appears to be out of the running. According to Sky SportsSouthampton have whittled down their shortlist to two – Danny Rohl and Will Still.

Still has built a stellar reputation as one of the best young up-and-coming coaches in European football. He impressed during a two-year stint with French outfit Reims and was heavily linked to the Sunderland job last summer. He opted to join RC Lens, where he has once again been praised.

The 32-year-old stepped down at Lens over the weekend, with reports stating he is keen to return to England for personal reasons.

Writer’s View

It is becoming increasingly likely that Danny Rohl will leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer. That was always the expectation and we should learn if Southampton is to be his new home in the coming weeks. The Saints are keen to name their new manager before the summer transfer window kicks off, giving them ample time to prepare for life in the Championship. However, should they opt for Still, Rohl is likely to be the subject of interest from a host of second tier clubs who are currently on the lookout for a new manager.
