Sam Cosgrove is attracting interest from Mansfield Town as Nigel Clough looks to reshape his squad ahead of the new League One season.
The Stags are reportedly eyeing the powerful forward, released by Barnsley earlier this month, in a bid to replace outgoing loanees and add depth to their attacking ranks.
Clough Plots Forward Reinforcements
Despite a solid start to the 2024/25 campaign, Mansfield eventually finished 17th in League One — a disappointing outcome for a club that had gained promotion the season before. Boss Nigel Clough, now set to sign a new contract, is wasting no time in reshaping his squad, with several loan players having returned to their parent clubs and veteran striker Lee Gregory yet to agree new terms.
According to reporter Alan Nixon, Mansfield have now identified Cosgrove as a key summer target. The 28-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving Barnsley, where he scored just four goals in over 50 league appearances.
Cosgrove’s Career At A Crossroads
Cosgrove’s form since his successful loan spell at Plymouth Argyle in 2022–23 has been patchy. That campaign saw him help the Pilgrims to a League One title under Steven Schumacher, but since then he has struggled for rhythm. A quiet spell at Barnsley was followed by an uneventful loan at Stockport County in the second half of 2024/25, where he failed to score in seven appearances.
However, Clough is believed to see potential in the former Aberdeen striker, who has proven in the past that he can be a handful for defenders when used effectively. Cosgrove is noted for his strength, aerial presence, and ability to bring others into play — qualities which could suit Mansfield’s system if deployed correctly.
Gregory’s Uncertain Future Creates Opportunity
One major factor in Mansfield’s interest is the uncertainty around Lee Gregory’s future. The 36-year-old struck ten league goals last season but missed the final months with a serious injury. With loanees Ben Waine and Jordan Rhodes also departing, the Stags are suddenly light in the forward department.
Cosgrove could represent a long-term successor to Gregory, offering a similar profile as a physical target man who can lead the line. While his shot accuracy and goalscoring numbers have dipped, Clough has a track record of getting the best out of experienced forwards and may believe Cosgrove’s best form can be rediscovered at Field Mill.
