Norwich City Set Sights On Championship Rival

Norwich City have added their name to the ever-growing list of admirers of Bristol City head coach Liam Manning, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

The Canaries have endured an underwhelming campaign which saw them spend the majority of the season languishing in mid-table. Having opted to replace David Wagner with Johannes Hoff Thorup last summer, the expectation was that they would at least challenge for a play-off place.

The Dane struggled to make an impact, leading to him losing his job in April. This saw first team coach and former England international Jack Wilshere given the reins until the end of the season, sparking rumours the 33-year-old could be given the job on a permanent basis. However, that was ruled out by sporting director Ben Knapper earlier this month.

Norwich Keen On Manning But Face Competition

Liam Manning has seen his stock rise considerably over the past year. Having joined Bristol City from Oxford United in November 2023, he guided the Robins into the Championship play-offs this season.

They were dismantled in the semi final by Sheffield United following a 6-0 aggregate defeat, but that doesn’t appear to have put off any potential suitors. Leicester City have been consistently linked with the 39-year-old, with the Foxes expected to part company with Ruud van Nistelrooy following their relegation from the Premier League.

According to Jacobs, Norwich have added Manning to their list of candidates, although it is said that a number of other clubs are also interested.

Others linked to the position at Carrow Road include Gary O’Neil, Pep Ljinders, Steve Cooper and Russell Martin.

Writer’s View

Manning would be a fantastic appointment for Norwich. He has proven his credentials during his short managerial career, both at Bristol City and Oxford United. However, opting to swap Ashton Gate for Carrow Road would be an odd choice. This would be viewed as a sideways step, although their league positions this season would indicate it would be a backwards one. The Robins seem to be a club with big ambitions and going places, whilst Norwich are clearly in transition. Should he opt to leave his current employers, Leicester would be the most likely destination at this stage.
