Kevin Nolan has said that he is not worried about the money he has to spend at Northampton Town.
The Cobblers were not one of League One’s big spenders this season, with their outlay believed to be among the lowest in the division. The issue of money spent in the third tier hit a fever pitch in the last 12 months as both automatically promoted sides in Birmingham City and Wrexham spent large amounts.
Nolan Pleased With Budget
Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, former West Ham midfielder Nolan discussed the fees being spent by other sides and whether big budgets lead to success. He said:
“It’s incredible and it’s not just League One,” said Nolan. “There are clubs in League Two and even in the National League who are breaking budgets. It’s difficult but as a manager you need to work around that.
“I’ve never worried about the budget. Me and Kelvin (Thomas) are really honest with each other in what we see and how we see it. Giving players a lot of money doesn’t always work anyway because it can upset the dressing room.“You have to keep everyone happy and that’s what we’ve got to do. We’ll set our stall out, we are Northampton and this is how we structure everything, and we believe we can do it with the budget we’ve set and get better. If I didn’t believe that, I wouldn’t have taken the job.”

Writers’ View
With clubs like Wrexham and Birmingham City and the owners they have spending big, it is easy to draw comparisons to other sides about budgets. But unfortunately, Northampton Town do not have the power to compete with sides like them and next season’s crop of relegated Championship clubs. The Cobblers may spent modestly but it has done well for them, with a very solid finish this season and a rock-solid budgeting plan in place. They will feel confident they can keep at this level and improve incrementally with this system in place.
