Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

Chesterfield welcome Walsall to Derbyshire on a six game unbeaten run and with just one defeat in their previous 13 outings. The Spireites beat Accrington Stanley on the final day of the season to secure their spot in the top seven, helped by Salford City’s inability to beat already relegated Carlisle United. Will Grigg’s 12th goal of the season was enough to give his side the all important three points to set up this clash with Walsall.

Paul Cook’s side have been outside of the top seven for the entirety of 2025 but put together an incredible run of form from the beginning of March that saw them win eight of their 13 matches. Prior to the Accrington victory, relegated Morecambe were beaten 4-1 at the SMH Group Stadium thanks to goals from Will Grigg, Ashley Palmer, Michael Olakigbe and Tom Naylor.

The Spireites were involved in a dramatic comeback on Easter Monday when Bradford City were the visitors to Derbyshire. The Bantams raced into a two goal lead before Jenson Metcalfe pulled one back for the hosts on the stroke of half time. It wasn’t long after the interval that Bradford restored their two goal cushion and they headed into the final twenty minutes 3-1 to the good.

Will Grigg gave his side hope before Liam Mandeville secured a late and vital point in the 92nd minute to keep his side’s playoff hope alive.

Chesterfield have registered three wins in their last five games and have won ten of their 23 home league matches this season, losing on just three occasions. The Spireites have scored 73 times in 46 matches, an average of 1.6 goals per match which is a record only bettered by their opponents Walsall. Will Grigg is the club’s top scorer with 12 followed by Armando Dobra who has nine while Liam Mandeville and Tom Naylor lead the assist charts with seven and six respectively.

Cook’s side have conceded 54 league goals at an average of 1.2 per outing and have kept 14 clean sheets.

Walsall were top of League Two from matchday 18 right the way through to matchday 40 before dropping to fourth having failed to win a match between February 25th and the final day of the season. That is a run of just one win in 14 matches that saw a seemingly guaranteed promotion slip from their grasp to leave the lottery of the playoffs.

Mat Sadler’s side still had automatic promotion within their sights on the final day as their 1-0 win at Crewe Alexandra looked to be enough to have snatched third place only for a 96th minute Antoni Sarcevic goal gave the Bantams the most dramatic of promotions.

The Saddlers lost games at home to Accrington Stanley, and Port Vale as well as dropping points to Harrogate Town on their own patch during the run-in. Added to draws at Newport County and Doncaster Rovers plus defeat at Barrow, this form ultimately cost Walsall the automatic opportunity to play in League One for the first time since 2019.

Walsall have scored 75 goals in League Two at an average of over 1.6 per game. A huge blow for the Saddlers was the departure of Nathan Lowe back to his parent club Stoke City in January. Lowe had bagged 15 league goals in just 22 outings before being recalled in January, a loss that the Saddlers failed to deal with.

Behind Lowe in the scoring charts is the evergreen Jamille Matt who has scored 12 times and Taylor Allen with ten. Allen is also one of his side’s leading assist makers with seven, second only to Connor Barrett with eight. The Midlands side have conceded 54 goals which is an average of 1.2 per match and have kept 15 clean sheets.

The previous meeting between these two ended in a comprehensive victory for Walsall who ran out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Jamille Matt, Ellis Harrison and Levi Amantchi saw them come from behind after an early Will Grigg strike. That victory followed a 2-2 draw at Chesterfield in a match where Walsall twice held the lead. The prolific Nathan Lowe gave the Saddlers the lead around the half hour mark before Daniel Oldaker levelled things up for Chesterfield on the stroke of half time. Lowe was again on the score sheet moments into the second half only for Dilan Markanday brought the scores level again with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Across the previous 13 matches between these two sides spanning the last 15 years, Chesterfield have won four times to Walsall’s five with four draws.
