Huddersfield Town Keen On Major Reunion

Huddersfield Town have offered former manager David Wagner the opportunity to return to the dugout at the John Smith’s Stadium, according to journalist Alex Crook.

The Terriers have endured another torrid season. Following their relegation from the Championship last season, they were expected to push at the top end of League One. A strong first half the campaign saw them keeping the pace with the top two, a run which included a 16 game unbeaten run between October and January.

A 1-0 home defeat against Bolton Wanderers on January 25th was the beginning of a dramatic collapse, which eventually led to head coach Michael Duff leaving the club in March. This led to former midfielder Jon Worthington promoted to interim boss for the remainder of the season.

The change in personnel failed to spark an upturn in results, with the 42-year-old recording just two wins during his spell in charge. The Yorkshire-based side also lost their last six games to finish 10th, 14 points off the play-off places.

Terriers Turn To Familiar Face

Keen to get the next appointment right, Huddersfield always stated that they wouldn’t bring in a permanent replacement until the summer. According to Alex Crooks, they are hoping to tempt David Wagner back to the club.

The 53-year-old has been out of work for the past year since leaving Norwich City at the end of the 2023/24 season. However, he is regarded as a hero in West Yorkshire, having guided the club to the Premier League in 2017.

The former Schalke boss then performed somewhat of a miracle by keeping the Terriers in the top tier, finishing four points above the bottom three in 16th. However, reality hit home the following season and he left the club by mutual consent in January 2019, with Huddersfield sitting bottom of the table.

Writer’s View

Huddersfield fans are desperate for a bit of good news following two really poor seasons. There is a certain romance behind bringing Wagner back to the club, although they may face competition from Southampton. It was thought that the Saints were set to bring in Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, but it is now claimed that alternatives are being explored. The Terriers may feel that their previous ties to the German will give them the edge though, although it will be interesting to see if he would consider dropping down into League One.
