Final Day League Two Permutations

All eyes in League Two tomorrow will be on the top of the table, as the promotion race goes to the final day. Two sides face a fight for the fourth-tier title, while one of three will join the already-promoted teams in League One next season. Every side in the top ten can move on the final day, as half of those teams are set to battle it out for the final two Play-Off spots. Morecambe and Carlisle United have already been relegated to the National League.

Fourth Tier Title

Doncaster Rovers and Port Vale were both promoted in the early kick-offs last weekend, but only one will win the title this afternoon. Donny currently have a one-point advantage, meaning that they just need to equal Vale’s result at Gillingham to finish first. The Valiants realistically have to win, with a point only being good enough to finish top if Rovers lose at Notts County by three or more goals.

Automatic Promotion

Incredibly, the Magpies somehow have a chance of automatic promotion on the final day. But for that to happen, Bradford City would have to lose, Walsall need to drop points, and County have to win. Any other scenario means that Stuart Maynard’s outfit will be in the Play-Offs.

They will be joined by Walsall if they aren’t victorious at Crewe Alexandra. The Saddlers know that only a point is good enough, as long as the Bantams are defeated and County drop points. A first win in fourteen for Mat Sadler’s side will see them reclaim a spot in the top three, which they had held for much of the season, if Bradford drop points.

That means the task should be simple for Bradford: beat Fleetwood and the sell-out Valley Parade crowd will be celebrating. If the Fishermen hold Graham Alexander’s men, then the Bantams will require a helping hand from Crewe to gain automatic promotion. A defeat would leave them very vulnerable, requiring Walsall to lose and Notts County to drop points in order to keep third spot.

Play-Off Race

AFC Wimbledon once had ambitions of a top-three finish, but those hopes are over. Instead, they face Grimsby Town later today, knowing that a positive result will see them safe inside the Play-Off positions. But if they lose to the Mariners, then a victory for either Salford or Chesterfield will see the Dons drop out of the top seven on the final day.

Salford City sneaked into seventh spot last Saturday, knowing that three points against Carlisle United will be enough for them to keep their Play-Off place. A draw should be enough to fend off Colchester United, unless they are victorious by more than six goals. But Karl Robinson’s side also require Grimsby and Chesterfield to drop points. Defeat leaves them needing the Cods and the Spireites to lose, with Colchester failing to win too.

Grimsby know that three points will be enough to regain their place in the top seven, as they will leapfrog their final day opponents, AFC Wimbledon. Defeat rules them out entirely thanks to their vastly inferior goal difference, while a point would only be enough if Chesterfield and Salford lose, along with Colchester failing to pick up three points.

A five-game unbeaten run has given Chesterfield hope on the final day, with a win enough if Salford drop points. A draw may take them up to seventh, but only if Colchester fail to win, along with defeats for Grimsby and Salford. Colchester are the outsiders for seventh position, requiring three points and the three teams above the U’s to all drop points.
