Shrewsbury Town Closing In On Permanent Managerial Appointment

Shrewsbury Town are in talks with Michael Appleton over extending his current deal, which is set to expire at the end of the season.

The former Blackpool and Lincoln City boss was named as Gareth Ainsworth’s successor in March after the 51-year-old opted to join League Two outfit Gillingham. Appleton was handed the reins on a short-term basis, taking over with Salop rooted to the foot of League One and nine points from safety.

Survival was never really an achievable goal though. Instead, the 49-year-old was tasked with stabilising the ship whilst providing an audition to land the role on a longer term basis.

Although he is yet to win a game, Appleton has been praised for his short stint at the Croud Meadow. He secured respectable away draws against promotion chasing Wycombe Wanderers and former club Lincoln, although relegation was confirmed following a 1-0 defeat against Wigan Athletic on Good Friday.

Appleton Set For Extension?

News has been filtering through over the course of the past week that talks are set to take place over a new deal. According to the BBC, a long-term contract is currently being discussed, with Appleton keen to extend his stay.

Speaking earlier this month, he confirmed his desire, saying:

“We’re due to sit down next week, I think it’s Tuesday, to discuss what potentially could happen. It’s something that hopefully will be a positive discussion.

“When I first came in, the first interview, it had been a while. As an individual, you’ve got to find out if that fire’s still burning, that passion. What I have found out is that it’s burning more than ever.

“I love being on the grass, that’s what I do best. But I’ve enjoyed the other side of it, trying to build and shape the team in a different way. The feedback I’ve been getting from players, staff and fans has been positive.”

Shrewsbury do have alternatives lined up should talks break down, including another ex-Lincoln boss Mark Kennedy.

Writer’s View

One thing that Shrewsbury need right now is stability. They thought they had it with Gareth Ainsworth and his departure to Gillingham came as somewhat of a sucker punch. Appleton has consistently stated that he would like to remain in Shropshire, which is one major box ticked for Salop. He also seems to have allured himself to the fans, who will be hopeful they can return to League One at the first time of asking.
