Birmingham City Target First Summer Signing

Birmingham City are opened talks with Peterborough United attacker Kwame Poku, according to Football Insider.

The Blues are readying a return to the Championship just one year after they dropped out of the second tier. Keen to make their stay in League One a short one, they hit the headlines last summer with an array of big money signings, including a reported £15 million for striker Jay Stansfield. There was also seven figure sums paid for the likes of Christoph Klarer, Willum Willumsson and Emil Hansson.

As a result, Birmingham stormed to the League One title, with their champions status confirmed last weekend when Wrexham could only manage a 0-0 draw at Wigan Athletic. It’s now expected to be another big summer as they target back-to-back promotions and a place in the Premier League.

Birmingham Hoping To Gain Advantage In Transfer Battle

It is claimed that work has already begun on a potential first summer transfer. According to reports, they have opened talks with Peterborough’s Kwame Poku, who looks set to leave the Weston Homes Stadium at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old has endured an injury-hit campaign but has still chipped in with 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. Ironically, he scored against Birmingham last week when the two sides met in Cambridgeshire, with Chris Davies’ side emerging with a 2-1 win to secure promotion. Poku was then in the starting lineup on Sunday when Posh were victorious at Wembley Stadium, beating the West Midlanders 2-0.

It is said that Darren Ferguson is keen to retain his services and a club record contract has been offered. However, this has been rejected.

The one-time Ghana international will see his current deal expire at the end of the season and he is expected to be a target for a number of Championship clubs. Peterborough won’t go empty handed though. With the former Colchester United winger being under 24-years-old, they will be due compensation.

Writer’s View

Poku looks destined to play in the Championship and you can’t blame Peterborough for wanting to extend his current deal. Posh are excellent when it comes to transfer dealings, but Poku is a player that would always be difficult to keep. Birmingham have seen close hand the damage he can do and it isn’t a major surprise to see him emerge as a transfer target. However, they are likely to be joined by a number of other second tier clubs, with the winger likely to have several options to choose from.
