Doncaster Rovers Miss Chance To Move Into Top Three

Salford City extended their unbeaten run in League Two to six matches after holding fellow promotion contenders Doncaster Rovers to a thrilling 1-1 draw at the Peninsula Stadium.

Despite the visitors twice finding the back of the net in the first half, only one goal stood. Rob Street’s composed finish midway through the opening period gave Doncaster a deserved lead, but it was quickly cancelled out by a superb free-kick from Luke Garbutt, ensuring the points were shared in a game full of incident and pace.

Disallowed goals and near-misses set the tone

The encounter started at a breakneck speed, with Jack Senior carving out an early chance for Doncaster. A slick exchange with James Maxwell allowed the full-back to pick out Street in the box, but the striker’s header went wide.

It looked as though Street had given Rovers the lead in the 15th minute, tapping in from close range after a defensive scramble. However, the referee halted the celebrations, penalising a foul on Haji Mnoga in the build-up.

The opener did arrive soon after when Jordan Gibson delivered a pinpoint free-kick, which Street latched onto with a sharp run and thumped past Matty Young.

Salford responded swiftly. Kelly Nmai was brought down on the edge of the box, and Garbutt stepped up to rifle the resulting free-kick into the bottom corner, levelling proceedings just five minutes later.

The hosts thought they had turned the game around on the stroke of half-time. Ossama Ashley rose highest to head in Ben Woodburn’s corner, but the goal was chalked off for a foul in the area.

Second Half Action

After the break, Salford pressed for a second, with Hakeeb Adelakun rattling the post before Woodburn forced a save moments later. Stockton and Woodburn continued to threaten, but Doncaster’s custodian Teddy Sharman-Lowe stood firm.

Rovers still posed a danger on the counter. Molyneux and Gibson linked up effectively, but the final ball often lacked precision. In stoppage time, Molyneux’s curling strike was comfortably saved by Young.

Salford finished the match with ten men after Curtis Tilt received a second booking following a clash with Sharman-Lowe in the dying moments.

Writer’s view

This was a missed opportunity for Doncaster, who could have climbed into the top three with a win. They showed flashes of quality, but lapses in concentration and an inspired Salford side denied them. For the Ammies, it’s another solid result as their unbeaten streak stretches to six, keeping them firmly in the play-off picture.
