Morecambe manager Derek Adams is refusing to give up hope that his side could yet beat the drop in League Two, but insists the time for talk is over.
The Shrimps have had to contend with a number of off-field issues which have severely impacted their efforts on the pitch this season. With the battle between supporters and the current owners ongoing, it appears as if they are set to suffer their second relegation in three years and drop into the National League next season.
There have been glimpses in recent weeks that Adams’ side are not willing to give up without a fight though, highlighted by wins over Swindon Town and Cheltenham Town. However, defeat against fellow strugglers Carlisle United last weekend saw them drop to the foot of the table and seven points from safety with only four games remaining.
Adams Remains Upbeat
Morecambe could be officially relegated on Good Friday if they lose against Bromley and Accrington Stanley and Tranmere Rovers both pick up three points. Despite that Adams isn’t willing to give up hope just yet, but insists his players need to start pulling out results. Speaking to The Lancaster Guardian, the former Bradford City boss said:
“We have been talking about getting results but we can’t just keep talking about it, we have to do it.
“We are trying ever so hard and we have a lot to do but we have to keep going. We find ourselves adrift of the teams above us and we have to do better.
“We need to win games and that is easier said than done. You want to try and create momentum and pressure, but sometimes it has got to come from within – and we weren’t able to do that on Saturday and we must look to do it this week.
“We do have belief because we have matched most teams in the league all season and we need that belief in the next week or so.”
Writer’s View
Derek Adams isn’t one to give up without a fight but he must know deep down that Morecambe are almost out for the count. In fairness to him, he was always fighting a losing battle this season and he must be commended for taking on the job in the first place. It’ll be interesting to see if he remains at the helm next season and try and bounce back at the first time of asking.
