Doncaster Rovers Boss Tips Youngster For Big Role

Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has hailed 19-year-old Will Flint as a player who is “more than ready” to step up as the club enters a crucial phase in their bid for promotion.

The versatile youngster, who recently returned from a successful loan at non-league Darlington, could be thrown into first-team action as injuries and suspensions stretch the squad ahead of a key fixture against Salford City.

Flint Ready To Step In

With Joseph Olowu ruled out for the rest of the season and several players carrying knocks, McCann may be forced to reshuffle. Flint, capable of playing either in defence or midfield, has impressed on his return to training and looks set to feature before the end of the campaign.

McCann believes the teenager’s rapid development while away from the club has made him a serious option for the run-in.

“He’s more than ready,” McCann enthused to the Free Press. “He’s an excellent young player, Will. He had a tremendous loan spell up at Darlington and has trained with us now for the last couple of weeks and doesn’t look out of place… I’ve got real high hopes for Will, I really do.”

Flint has made four senior appearances for Rovers so far, but the current circumstances could see that number rise significantly in the coming weeks.

Doncaster’s Away Support Applauded

Meanwhile, McCann also took time to praise the club’s travelling support, with more than 1,000 fans expected at tonight’s match and even more anticipated for Friday’s trip to Tranmere Rovers.

The manager believes the backing from the terraces has played a key part in Rovers boasting the best away record in League Two this season.

“The fans have been outstanding, they really have… it’s no coincidence that we’re the best team away from home in the division given the support we receive.”

With three away games still remaining, the manager says the players are drawing strength from the loyal following and hopes it continues to inspire the side through to a successful conclusion to the season.

McCann’s faith in Flint is a sign of the club’s growing confidence in its academy setup. If the teenager does step into a key role during this high-pressure period, it could mark the start of a long-term first-team career. Just as vital, though, is the unwavering away support, which continues to provide the energy and belief behind Rovers’ late-season charge.
