Matt Hamshaw is in talks with Rotherham United’s chairman Tony Stewart regarding the vacant managerial position, according to the Rotherham Advertiser.
The boyhood Millers fan is currently the interim manager until the end of the season, but it is clear that he has plans beyond the current campaign.
Impressive Start
At the beginning of the 24/25 season, Rotherham were expected to challenge at the top end of League One. But it has been a struggle all term, as the South Yorkshire side were dragged into a relegation battle at the end of 2024.
While the Millers quickly moved away from the bottom end of the third tier, a woeful four-nil defeat to Crawley Town last month saw Steve Evans lose his job. Regardless of his second stint in charge, which lasted less than twelve months, Evans will always be considered a club legend following his double promotion over a decade ago.
Hamshaw, joined by Andy Warrington among others, was announced as Rotherham’s interim manager, which has been a huge success thus far. He has won all three games in charge so far, beginning with a rare away success at Northampton Town before defeating Play-Off chasing Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers. A sell-out away end awaits this afternoon as the 43-year-old returns to Stockport County, where he had a single-season spell twenty years ago.
What’s Next?
After Hamshaw was appointed, some believed that Paul Warne would return to the Millers, as the pair formed part of his coaching team at Derby County. But it appears there are no current plans for another former boss to return to this part of South Yorkshire.
Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser on Thursday, Hamshaw mentioned his dialogue with Tony Stewart.
“We’re in constant contact. It’s something we’re both thinking about, otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you now.
“I speak to the chairman every day really, we have a good relationship. He’s happy with how things are going at the moment, as we all are.
“There’s no rush from me or him. I’m sure he’s got questions for me, and I’ve got questions for him. We’ll see how things go and we’ll make a decision together.”
Writer’s View
There is no surprise about this latest development, given how Matt Hamshaw’s reign has begun. The Millers look like a side with confidence instilled in them again, but a big summer is required for a proper challenge at the top of League One next season. Whether that is with their boyhood fan in charge though remains to be seen.
