AFC Wimbledon Secure Striker On Two-Year Deal

AFC Wimbledon have tied down one of League Two’s most dangerous forwards, with Matty Stevens signing a new two-year contract that extends his stay at Plough Lane until summer 2027.

The 27-year-old joined the Dons in May 2024 as a free agent after his release from Forest Green Rovers. He’s since made himself indispensable to Johnnie Jackson’s side, scoring 21 goals in all competitions – 17 in League Two – and emerging as one of the division’s top marksmen.

Early Extension

Stevens still had another season remaining on his initial contract, but his performances have earned him an early extension.

“I’m over the moon. I’ve always said since I got here that I’ve really enjoyed it and I think this extension underlines that. The main thing now is to focus on matters on the pitch. Myself and my family are delighted to get this agreement done.

The fans, staff and players have made me feel so comfortable here – they all played a big role in my decision. Now we have to come together to get us over the line and back into League One.”

Matty Stevens Career

Stevens’ football journey is anything but conventional. A talented youth boxer, he gave up the gloves at 15 to pursue football. He caught attention in Reading’s youth setup before making his senior debut for Barnet at just 16 years and 204 days – becoming the club’s youngest ever player at the time.

A goal-scoring machine from the start, he netted 57 goals across youth and senior competitions in the 2014–15 season, attracting interest from Premier League clubs including Manchester United and Manchester City.

Spells with Peterborough United, Forest Green, and several non-league sides followed. It was at Forest Green where Stevens really made his mark, helping them win promotion in 2022 and becoming the club’s joint-second all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 133 games.

After back-to-back relegations, Stevens moved on and found a new home in Wimbledon. His impact was immediate, scoring on his debut in a 4-2 victory over Colchester and becoming a consistent match-winner throughout the campaign.

Writer’s view

Locking down Stevens is a smart move from AFC Wimbledon. His goals have been central to their promotion bid, and this new deal not only rewards him but sends a message of intent. With his experience, track record, and sharp finishing, Stevens is more than just a goal-scorer – he’s a leader. Keeping him happy and focused could be the key to securing League One football next season.
