Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson believes goal difference could prove decisive in the League One promotion race after watching his side cruise to a 3-0 win over Burton Albion at The Racecourse.
Three second-half goals secured the victory for the Reds, who capitalised on Burton being reduced to 10 men to move six points clear of third-placed Wycombe Wanderers. The Chairboys have a game in hand, but Wrexham’s destiny remains in their own hands with five matches remaining.
Clinical in the Second Half
After a frustrating first half, Parkinson’s side found their rhythm after the break. Steven Fletcher opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 71st minute after Sam Smith was brought down by Burton goalkeeper Max Crocombe. Smith then added a second before Jack Marriott completed the scoring to wrap up a dominant performance.
“Definitely, goal difference could be key. It could come down to that. We’re pleased we got the three goals, obviously we’d like more but we’ll take the three and the clean sheet.”
The result not only strengthened Wrexham’s grip on an automatic promotion spot, but also gave them a boost in goal difference—a factor Parkinson believes could play a crucial role in the final standings.
The goals came in a flurry, with Fletcher calmly converting the spot-kick, before Smith finished off a superb move started by Ryan Longman’s incisive pass. Marriott’s late goal was a moment of personal triumph, marking his return from injury with a well-taken strike.
“It was a brilliantly taken penalty by Fletch, brave from Sam to win the penalty,” said Parkinson. “The next two goals, a brilliant pass by Ryan Longman and a very cool finish by Sam, and obviously Jack getting a goal which is brilliant for him… he deserves that moment.”
The clean sheet was another bonus for Wrexham, who now turn their attention to the run-in, knowing that continued form could see them secure a return to the Championship.

Writer’s view
Parkinson knows exactly what it takes to grind through the pressures of a promotion race, and Saturday’s result was another sign of his side’s maturity. With Wycombe still looming and games in hand muddying the waters, goal difference could very well separate success from heartbreak. The manager’s focus on the finer margins might just prove decisive. For Wrexham, every goal from here on in could be as valuable as three points.
