Chris Davies has confirmed Birmingham City will be without Emil Hansson this weekend, with the winger also a major doubt for the upcoming Wembley final against Peterborough United.
Hansson missed Tuesday’s victory over Bristol Rovers after suffering a training-ground injury and now looks set to be sidelined for several weeks. The Swede has already endured two spells out this season due to muscular issues and now faces another frustrating period on the treatment table.
Setback comes at crucial moment
Davies offered updates on Hansson and two other injured players, club captain Krystian Bielik and utility man Taylor Gardner-Hickman, ahead of Saturday’s clash with Barnsley at St Andrew’s.
“Frustratingly for Emil and us, he picked up a bit of a knock in training the day before the game, so that’s disappointing. It’s not a season-ender, it will be a few weeks maximum. We’ll have to see how he goes in the next few days.”
The 26-year-old has made a significant contribution to Birmingham’s League One promotion bid, but looks likely to miss the upcoming Vertu Motors Trophy final at Wembley.
Elsewhere, Gardner-Hickman is edging closer to a return after nearly a month on the sidelines. Davies revealed he is expected to resume training early next week. Bielik, meanwhile, is being carefully managed as he deals with a persistent niggle.
“Taylor is close to training with the team again – that is scheduled for early next week. Krystian has just been managing a niggle. It’s nothing major but it’s something we’re working with him on.”
Despite the injury concerns, Birmingham remain firmly in the promotion hunt and have impressed with their form in recent weeks under Davies’ guidance.
Promotion Push Still on Track
Despite the injury blow to Hansson, Birmingham fans remain hopeful for a strong finish to the season. For those keeping an eye on the odds, betway’s football betting markets continue to track the Blues’ promotion push and Wembley prospects.
Ticket Issues
Injuries are not the only problem facing the Blues. This week, they warned fans not to buy tickets in Peterborough’s section for the final this weekend. Violators risk club bans and possible police action. The club stressed safety and seating integrity and is working with Peterborough United to identify those attempting to breach ticketing rules.
Writer’s view
The timing of Hansson’s injury couldn’t be worse for Birmingham. His pace and directness have been pivotal this season, and missing out on a Wembley appearance would be a cruel blow. However, Davies will be relieved that the issue isn’t long-term. If Gardner-Hickman and Bielik return as hoped, Blues should still have enough depth to maintain momentum during the run-in. Much now depends on how the squad copes in these next few decisive weeks.
