‘Can’t Do That’ – Doncaster Rovers Manager on Player’s Future

Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann has addressed the recent questions surrounding the club’s loan recall strategy, particularly the situation regarding centre-back Bobby Faulkner.

Rovers fans had been left wondering why Faulkner, who is currently on loan at Buxton, was not recalled to bolster the squad for the remainder of the season. The clarification came following McCann’s comments after Doncaster’s victory over Carlisle United this weekend.

The confusion stemmed from the recent recall of Will Flint from Darlington. Flint, a versatile academy graduate, had been excelling in the National League North, making over 40 appearances for Darlington. His recall was prompted by a season-ending injury to defender Joseph Olowu, leaving McCann with a gap to fill in his defensive line.

No Recall

However, the decision to recall Faulkner was not as simple as it might have seemed. McCann explained that the reason for not bringing Faulkner back was tied to football regulations that restrict players from representing more than two clubs in a single season. Faulkner, who had already played for Dundalk in the League of Ireland earlier this year, is ineligible to play for Doncaster Rovers this season due to this rule.

“You can only play for two clubs in one season so it was never an option for us to bring Bobby back. We probably would have brought him back, as well as Will, just to keep us covered but we obviously can’t do that.”

Despite this, McCann was quick to clarify that Faulkner’s situation had not been overlooked. He pointed out that the 20-year-old has been performing well at Buxton and is enjoying his loan spell there, so the club had no intention of interrupting that progress.

“He’s playing well at Buxton and enjoying it so we’re happy for him to continue to play. But as I said, Will can play numerous positions so he gives us a lot of options,” said McCann.

The recall of Flint, who has a more flexible playing style that can accommodate several positions, is seen as a strategic move to shore up Rovers’ defensive ranks as the club enters a crucial phase of the season. McCann is confident that Flint’s adaptability will help cover the loss of Olowu and give the team the flexibility they need as they push for promotion.

Writer’s View

The decision not to recall Faulkner seems to be a pragmatic one based on the complexities of football’s regulations. While fans might have been disappointed not to see the young centre-back return to action for his parent club, McCann’s focus on managing the squad’s resources while adhering to the rules shows a level of careful planning. The recall of Flint will certainly bring much-needed versatility to Doncaster’s defensive setup, and McCann’s acknowledgment of Faulkner’s good form at Buxton ensures that the young defender’s development is still being closely monitored.
