Boston United Striker Stays Positive After Relegation Blow

Jacob Hazel has urged his Boston United teammates to stay positive and move forward after their 4-1 defeat to Hartlepool United dented their recent upturn in form.

The experienced forward struck for the eighth time in 13 appearances but could not prevent his side slipping to their first defeat in seven matches. Despite the scoreline, Hazel remained upbeat and backed the Pilgrims to respond swiftly with a home fixture against Southend United looming.

Setback, but belief remains strong

Boston had travelled to the north east on the back of an impressive unbeaten run and chasing a sixth straight win on the road. The result could have seen them exit the bottom four for the first time under Graham Coughlan, but instead, they remain 23rd — three points from safety but with two games in hand.

“The way it happened today was disappointing,” said Hazel. “We’re in good form, they aren’t in such good form. It’s like a rock and a hard place – something was always going to give for one of us. We’ll take our medicine tonight but roll into Tuesday and hopefully get back on it.”

The 30-year-old forward caused problems throughout the match and nearly added to his tally with a clever lob over the goalkeeper that bounced just over. He was one of the few bright sparks in a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.

Hazel’s recent form has mirrored Boston’s revival under Coughlan. Since the former Newport and Mansfield boss replaced Ian Culverhouse in November, the team has shown greater resilience and attacking threat. A shock win over title-chasing York in January was the catalyst for their improved performances.

With home support behind them and renewed energy from recent results, Hazel believes the Pilgrims can bounce back quickly and reignite their push for survival when they host Southend, a side chasing promotion.

Writer’s view

Hazel’s positivity offers a much-needed boost for Boston at a crucial moment in their season. One bad result doesn’t undo the progress made under Coughlan, and with games in hand, survival remains achievable. If Hazel continues his scoring form and the defence tightens up, the Pilgrims could still author a remarkable escape.
