Mark Hughes Explains Carlisle United ‘Focus Shift’

Mark Hughes has confirmed that Carlisle United will not be holding further in-house bounce games this week, as he believes his squad is now “up to speed” in terms of match fitness.

End of In-House Games

Since taking over, the head coach has used internal matches to provide game time for players lacking match fitness, particularly those returning from injury. However, Hughes has now decided that his full squad is ready to compete, shifting the focus entirely to training as Carlisle prepares for a crucial League Two survival battle against Bromley this Saturday.

“No – I’ve got us up to speed now so I can pick from the whole group,” Hughes said when asked about further bounce games.

Key Players Benefit from Recent Games

Previously, Hughes arranged these matches to help integrate players like Callum Guy and Archie Davies, both of whom benefited from the extra minutes before making their first-team return. The coach has spoken in the past about varying fitness levels within the squad and the difficulty in ensuring every player is match-ready.

“It just helps the squad. A number of the players haven’t had any game time or not played as much,” Hughes explained last week. “The guys on the bench, they need a little bit more game time in bigger areas so that’s why we do it.”

With those concerns now seemingly resolved, Hughes is confident that more of his squad are capable of lasting a full 90 minutes, giving him greater selection flexibility heading into the season’s final stretch.

Training Takes Centre Stage

With bounce games no longer necessary, Hughes is placing greater emphasis on structured training sessions. He wants his squad to build consistency while also ensuring the coaching staff tailors sessions to the group’s needs.

“It’s important to be innovative but sometimes you just need a little bit of consistency and understanding what the group needs and the work that they need,” he said. “That’s what we’ll go through as a coaching group and we’ll present that to them as the week progresses.”

Final Push for Survival

With Carlisle United still fighting to stay in League Two, Hughes’ decision to shift from bounce games to full training sessions reflects his belief that the team is physically prepared for the battles ahead. The upcoming clash with Bromley will be a crucial test of that readiness.

Writer’s View

There should be only one focus for Carlisle: winning games. It’s looking increasingly bleak for the Cumbrians, who have only spent a single year outside the Football League since 1928.

This weekend’s results have left them knee-deep in the mire and sinking quickly, and while Hughes needs to talk up positivity in the press, he needs something special on the field, not off it, to keep them up.
