Wrexham took a significant step towards automatic promotion with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park, moving three points clear of their promotion rivals in League One.
Phil Parkinson’s side secured the win thanks to a stunning 78th-minute volley from Sam Smith, but the game was overshadowed by a medical incident in the away end that led to a 50-minute stoppage in the second half. Fortunately, the affected supporter was taken to hospital in a stable condition, allowing the match to resume.
Parkinson keeps feet on the ground
Despite the magnitude of the result, Parkinson insisted that Wrexham cannot afford to get carried away with nine games still remaining in the season.
“We’re not going to over celebrate this at all because it’s just three points,” he said. “We spoke about the magnitude of the game coming into it and we can’t play it down now. It’s a big win, but we need to stay focused.”
The Reds had previously won four consecutive away matches before suffering a 2-0 defeat at Reading last Tuesday. Parkinson admitted that his side was below their usual standards in that game but praised their response against Wycombe.
A statement victory in the promotion race
With leaders Birmingham City setting the pace at the top, Wrexham and Wycombe have been locked in a battle for second place for much of the season. Having already beaten the Chairboys 3-2 at The Racecourse on the opening day, Wrexham completed the double over their promotion rivals in a crucial moment of the campaign.
Parkinson acknowledged the significance of taking points off their nearest challengers.
“That’s really important because we’ve taken points off our nearest rivals. We’re not going to get carried away, but there was a strong character shown today.”
Wrexham eyeing historic third promotion
The club’s rapid rise through the leagues continues, and with just nine matches left, they remain in contention for a remarkable third successive promotion. While Parkinson remains cautious, this win puts Wrexham in a strong position heading into the business end of the season.
Writer’s view
Wrexham’s victory at Wycombe could be one of the defining moments of their season. In a high-stakes promotion race, these are the results that matter most. Their ability to respond to setbacks, such as the loss at Reading, is what sets them apart as serious contenders for automatic promotion. With momentum on their side, Wrexham are now in the driving seat—but as Parkinson wisely points out, the job is far from finished.
