Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Northampton Town head into this fixture on the back of an impressive victory at Leyton Orient om Saturday. On loan Birmingham attacker Tyler Roberts opened the scoring for the Cobblers before Cameron McGeehan bagged what turned out to be the winner on the stroke of half time.
Town have picked up some impressive results over recent weeks, including victories against Huddersfield Town, Mansfield Town and Bristol Rovers and have lost just once in their last five. The eight points picked up from those five games have seen Northampton put some much needed breathing space between themselves and the relegation places.
Kevin Nolan’s men are 19th in the league and have picked up 41 points from their 36 games and 20 under the former Bolton Wanderers midfielder. The Cobblers have scored 36 goals in 36 games with top scorer Cameron McGeehan scoring nine times ahead of Tom Eaves and Sam Hoskins on four apiece.
Defensively, Northampton have conceded 53 goals at an average of 1.5 per game and have kept nine clean sheets.
Birmingham City have lost just three times all season and have won four of their last five League One matches. The Blues defeated Stevenage on Tuesday in a rearranged fixture to extend their lead at the top of the table to 14 points with just 11 games left to play.
Kieran Dowell opened the scoring with a 27th minute penalty before Seung-Ho Paik scored the all important second goal just after half time to seal the three points. It was Dowell again from the spot who scored the only goal of the game last Saturday to beat Lincoln City at St Andrew’s.
City are 14 points clear at the top having lost just three times this season and remain unbeaten at home. They have scored 58 goals so far this season at an average of 1.7 per game and top scorer jay Stansfield has netted 16 times. Alfie May has ten goals to his name and also leads the assist charts with six.
They also possess the meanest defence in the league and have allowed just 23 goals against them so far at an average of 0.7 per match and have kept a hugely impressive 18 cleans sheets.
Northampton Town and Birmingham City have not been regular opponents over the years, with this season’s reverse fixtures the first meeting between the clubs on a competitive level since 1990. In the five meetings between the pair, Birmingham have lost just once and have come out on top twice.
That meeting in March 1990 was a Division Three fixture that ended all square as the two sides shared four goals between them and it followed a thumping win for Birmingham in October 1989 as the Blues ran out 4-0 winners at St Andrew’s.
The reverse fixture between the sides this season, again in the third tier of English football, was played in front of almost 25,500 spectators and ended with Northampton leaving St Andrew’s with a dramatic point. Big money signing Jay Stansfield had given the home side the lead just before the hour mark and he looked to have given his side all three points. Northampton, however, had other ideas and rescued a point in the 96th minute thanks to Mitchell Pinnock.
