Peterborough United Receive Huge Boost Ahead Of Wycombe Clash

Peterborough United have received a huge boost ahead of the visit of promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers, with manager Darren Ferguson revealing that three first team stars are set to return to the squad.

It’s been a disappointing campaign for the Cambridgeshire-based side. After reaching the League One play-offs in each of the last two seasons, they have found themselves in an unlikely relegation battle this time around.

There have been a number of factors for their drop off, including the sales of big-name players last summer and a number of injuries throughout their first team squad. Posh have eased fears of the drop somewhat in recent weeks and are unbeaten in their last four league games. However, they are still just five points off the bottom four.

Return Of Top Scorer

With the business end of the season now in full swing, Ferguson has revealed that top scorer Kwame Poku is set to return to the squad. The 23-year-old has 10 goals this season but hasn’t featured since early December.

Peterborough are also set to welcome back defenders Carl Johnston and Emmanuel Fernandez, the latter who is returning from suspension. Speaking to The Peterborough TelegraphFerguson said:

“It’s the most players I’ve had available for selection all season I’m facing some tough conversations as I’m going to be leaving five players out of the matchday squad, but that’s a good thing for me.

“Manny, Kwame and CJ are all available again. We decided to leave Kwame out of the Blackpool game on Tuesday to give him a full week’s training and he trained very well yesterday so he’s definitely ready.”

Writer’s View

This is huge news for Peterborough and one that will provide them some much-needed experience within their squad. Supporters will be delighted to hear of Poku’s return in particular. The attacker is still the club’s top scorer this season, despite not having played in nearly three months. These players can return knowing that there is still a battle to be completed, albeit one that has been made slightly easier by their recent run. Wycombe will be a tough task but they have home advantage. A minimum of another point would set them up nicely ahead of the trip to rivals Cambridge United next weekend.
