Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Despite suffering defeat just once in their last eight league games, Wycombe’s form has dipped a little and they are being chased down by Wrexham and Stockport County for that second automatic promotion berth. During that eight game streak, the Chairboys may have proven hard to beat but have only won on three occasions and have picked up just 13 points. Last time out, Xavier Simons was sent off as they went down 1-0 away at league leaders Birmingham City to leave the title all but gone. Prior to that, draws with Wigan Athletic, Crawley Town, Cambridge United and Northampton Town were sandwiched by victories at home to Bristol Rovers and Barnsley.
Wycombe have had an incredible season, sitting second behind big spending Birmingham City but 12 points behind having played a game more. They have amassed 64 points from 33 League One outings, scoring 58 times which is the most in the division. On average, they score 1.8 goals per game with top scorer Richard Kone helping himself to 16 already this season and he has been supported by leading creators Gareth McCleary and Cameron Humphreys who have assisted six goals apiece.
Mike Dodds’s side have one of the best defensive records in the league too, conceding just 32 times in League One and keeping 11 clean sheets so far. Centre back Caleb Taylor and holding midfield man Josh Scowen have contributed greatly to these records with some excellent displays this campaign.
Burton Albion looked set for a return to League Two before the appointment of Gary Bowyer gave them hope, with the former Blackburn Rovers boss securing five wins and six draws from his 15 games in the Burton dugout. The Brewers are unbeaten in three and have lost just once in their last ten games, winning five of those. Saturday saw Albion host Mansfield Town and come away with a point as the Stags missed a penalty in the dying moments that would have given them all three points. Prior to that home draw, Bowyer’s side won twice on the road at Stevenage and Lincoln City, both victories coming by a goal to nil and thanks to Charlie Webster.
Bowyer’s appointment has given the club hope of avoiding the drop but they are still two points from safety having played a game more than closest rivals Bristol Rovers. The Brewers have claimed 33 points from 34 games and have won on seven occasions, five of which have come under their current manager. Burton score an average of one goal per game and top scorer Danilo Orsi gas found the net six times with the leading creators at the club assisting three goals each, a list that includes Orsi and Owen Dodgson.
Albion have kept nine clean sheets so far this season and have conceded an average of 1.4 goals per games as keeper Max Crocombe has been one of their most consistent performers.
Over the last 18 meetings between these two sides, they cannot be separated in terms of wins, with each claiming eight victories. The meeting earlier this season saw Wanderers edge a five goal thriller thanks to a late Ryan Sweeney own goal after Burton had twice come from behind to draw level.
They were unable to be separated last season as the spoils were shared in both games, with Burton coming away from Wycombe with a point after a 0-0 draw and Wycombe leaving Staffordshire with a share of the points thanks to Sam Vokes equalising and cancelling out a Beryly Lubala strike.
Burton Albion’s last win in the fixture came back in March 2023 thanks to goals from Dale Taylor and Joe Powell. Burton had Adedeji Oshilaja sent off on the stroke of half time and Joe Jacobsen missed a penalty for the Chairboys before Tjay De Barr pulled one back for Wycombe but the Brewers held on for all three points.
